Step 5
Track Performance with Time in Status & Transition Metrics
Move beyond simple data pulls and start generating real business insights. This is where you can track team velocity, identify bottlenecks, and measure cycle times directly in your spreadsheet.
A. How to Track "Time in Status"
This metric tells you the total time an issue has spent in one or more specific statuses. It's great for spotting where work gets stuck.
First, click the "Fetch & Refresh Statuses" button to ensure you have the latest status list from your Jira project.
Under the "Time in Status" section, you will see a list of all available statuses (e.g., "To Do," "In Progress," "In Review").
Simply check the box next to each status you wish to track.
After you save and sync, new columns like Time in In Review (Seconds) will be added to your sheet, showing the total time each issue spent in that state.
B. How to Measure "Time in Transitions" (e.g., Cycle Time, Lead Time)
This is a powerful feature to measure the duration between two points in your workflow.
Under the "Time in Transitions" section, click the "Add Transition Metric" button.
Name: Give your metric a clear, descriptive name, such as "Customer Lead Time" or "Development Cycle." This name will become a column header.
From Status: Choose the starting point of your measurement. Select [Issue Creation] to start counting from the moment the ticket was created, or choose a specific status like "In Progress."
To Status: Choose the end point of your measurement, such as "Done" or "Ready for QA." (Optional) Exclude Statuses: If you want to pause the clock when an issue is in a certain state (e.g., "On Hold" or "Waiting for Feedback"), you can select those statuses here.
Save your configuration and run a sync to see your new metric calculated for every issue.
Pro-Tip: Calculate in Business Hours
These time-based metrics become even more accurate when you combine them with the Working Calendar feature, which can exclude non working hours, weekends and holidays from the calculation.
Note on Calculations
All the calculations are in seconds so that you can easily modify into whichever format you prefer later.
If the To Status doesn't occur yet - the Time in Transition would be counted till the current time
Time in Transition is calculated from the First occurance of the From Status to the Last Occurance of the To Status
